It is a neurological disease that is caused by compression of the median nerve to the wrist. This nerve originates in the cervical spinal cord, through the arm and ends in the fingers. The carpal tunnel is a narrow structure which straddles tendons. When the tunnel is narrowed by inflammation of the tissues around it or go inside, the median nerve is trapped. Patients complain of pain and numbness in the palm of the hand and the first three or four fingers, especially at night, and lack of strength. Treatment may include:
- Conservative:immobilization with functional splinting, anti-inflammatory and even infiltration.
- Surgical: surgical treatment in the most rebellious cases. Through a small incision in the wrist, the median nerve is released by opening the overlying ligament.
