An elbow dislocation occurs when the bones of the forearm (the radius and ulna) move out of place compared with the bone of the upper arm (the humerus). This very common mechanism involves falling onto an outstretched hand. When this happens and there is suspicion of a dislocation, proceed to the immobilitation and go to an Emergency Department for diagnosis and treatment. This injury can sometimes also involve the ligaments and / or surrounding nerves, so early detection is very important.
The solution is the relocation of the elbow, which can be performed under anesthesia and immobilization. The rigidity can be overcome with rehabilitation afterwards.
Surgery may be necessary if the joint instability persists.
