Shoulder disorders in racquet sports

Sports injuries in the shoulder are less common than those occurring in the knees and legs, and so long they have been given less attention, although they may be just as devastating for the athlete who makes movements above the head as those affecting the knee.

The shoulder of these athletes during the movement over the head, is subject to tremendous forces, forces which would never be suffered by the shoulder of a person who does not perform these movements..

In addition there is another fact, derived from the repetition of movement above the head during these sports. This overuse can cause that a movement, initially considered benign, with no danger and that by itself does not cause any injury, may turn into a condition that becomes completely disabling.

The list of injuries that can occur on the shoulder of the tennis or paddle tennis player is endless, but the most frequent and relevant are those derived from the rotator cuff and injury of the suprascapular nerve.

Usually most of these injuries will produce slow and progressive symptoms, since they develop slowly when overuse of the shoulder, being less frequent the acute lesions due to jerking. Patients usually present pain in the shoulder region, whose location can be very variable, which usually occurs during sports and persists after exercise. When the symptom is more advanced there is acute pain, which increases at night. Gradually the range of motion of the shoulder is limited, until it becomes impossible to do the sporting movement.
